‘Haryana poll results unacceptable, will approach EC with complaints’, says Congress after defeat
Following a disappointing defeat in the Haryana elections, the Congress party has announced its intention to approach the Election Commission of India (ECI) to raise concerns over alleged irregularities in the electoral process. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed disbelief at the results, claiming they contradict the public sentiment and aspirations for change in the state.
“The election results are unexpected and alarming, going against what the people of Haryana truly wanted—a mandate for transformation,” Ramesh stated on Tuesday, questioning the legitimacy of the outcomes. He alleged that intimidation tactics were employed against authorities, contributing to unexpected losses in traditionally strong constituencies for Congress.
Ramesh detailed serious complaints regarding the counting process and the functionality of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in districts including Hisar, Mahendragarh, and Panipat. “We have received numerous reports of EVM malfunctions, including battery issues and inconsistent results,” he said, indicating that these complaints will be formally submitted to the ECI.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera echoed these sentiments, condemning the election as “a victory for manipulation and a defeat for democracy.” He highlighted the serious allegations concerning the counting process and the EVMs, asserting that such irregularities raise significant questions about the integrity of the election.
Khera criticized the overall electoral process, noting the disbelief surrounding the surprising results and emphasizing that Congress candidates have already filed grievances with local returning officers.
Amidst these tensions, the Congress party is also closely monitoring political developments in Jammu and Kashmir, where the National Conference-Congress alliance has secured a clear mandate. Ramesh affirmed that the coalition’s primary focus will be on restoring statehood to the region.
“The chapter on Haryana is not closed; it will continue,” he asserted, while expressing confidence in the coalition government forming in Jammu and Kashmir, despite attempts to undermine their majority.
Earlier in the day, Congress lodged complaints with the ECI regarding delays in updating poll results on its website. However, the ECI dismissed these claims, stating that the counting process was conducted under strict supervision.
