More than 25,000 applicants turned up for 600 vacancies
On Tuesday, a recruitment event by Air India for airport loaders resulted in a stampede-like situation at Air India Airport Services Ltd in Mumbai’s Kalina. Over 25,000 applicants arrived for just 600 vacancies, overwhelming Air India staff who struggled to manage the massive crowd.
Videos of the crowd doing rounds on social media show thousands of people rushing toward the interview centre. Some people can also be seen climbing vehicles and trees to reach the centre faster.
Amid the rush, authorities were also forced to intervene to prevent any stampede-like situation.
However, the company has reportedly assured that all submitted CVs will be reviewed and the eligible candidates will be contacted for further process.
Airport loaders are tasked with loading and unloading luggage on aircraft and operating baggage belts and ramp tractors. Each aircraft needs at least five loaders to handle luggage, cargo, and food supplies.
In a notification dated June 28, the company said: “AI Airport Services Ltd (formerly known as Air India Air Transport Services Limited) (AIASL) wishes to fill in existing vacancies as per the estimated requirements and maintain a wait-list for vacancies arising in the future. Indian nationals (Male & Female) who meet with the requirements stipulated as mentioned herein, may apply for various posts at Mumbai International Airport posts on a Fixed Term Contract basis (3 years) which may be renewed subject to their performance and the requirements of the AI Airport Services Limited. The number of vacancies are indicative and may vary as per the operational requirement.”
