From Undisclosed Locations to Obama’s Memoir: Trivedi’s Press Conference Puts Rahul Gandhi’s Foreign Trips Under the Scanner
The BJP has put Rahul Gandhi’s foreign trips at the centre of its attack on the Leader of the Opposition.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi on Friday, party national spokesperson and MP Sudhanshu Trivedi alleged that Gandhi heads to undisclosed locations on his travels abroad and meets “questionable individuals.” On returning home, Trivedi claimed, he turns to what the BJP calls anti-India propaganda.
Trivedi then turned to the state of the Congress itself. He argued that Gandhi’s style of politics has hollowed out the party and lowered the dignity of the Leader of the Opposition’s post. He pointed to the demonstrations near the Prime Minister’s residence and the protesters’ entry into Akashvani Bhavan as examples of that conduct. Echoing a jibe from the Prime Minister, he said the Congress keeps relaunching a product that has already failed, and that in doing so it has put both the party and the nation’s constitutional framework at risk.
He also accused Gandhi of making contradictory claims during his protests about backing from officials and political figures, and questioned what basis there was for treating such claims as proof of wider support.
Trivedi cited a passage in Barack Obama’s memoir A Promised Land describing Gandhi after the two met during Obama’s 2010 India visit. In Trivedi’s reading, the passage shows Gandhi to be politically underprepared, and he dared the Congress to respond to Obama’s observations.
The BJP is also asking questions about foreign-funded organisations and political activism in India. In the US, the House Ways and Means Committee is examining funding networks linked to businessman Neville Roy Singham, according to Fox News. Lawmakers want to know whether money routed through tax-exempt nonprofits has served Chinese Communist Party interests. The People’s Forum Inc. and BreakThrough News are resisting the committee’s demands for financial records, with BreakThrough News warning that forced depositions of journalists threaten press freedom. BJP leaders are now asking whether Singham-linked groups have any connection to political activity in India, including Gandhi’s protests against the Election Commission.
