Meta Adds Parental Control to Threads in India Amid Child Safety Concerns

Meta tightens child safety on Threads with new India rollout

Threads becomes the latest Meta platform to get parental supervision nearly three years after its 2023 launch

Meta has begun rolling out parental supervision tools for Threads in India as part of a broader expansion across the Asia-Pacific region, giving parents and guardians new ways to monitor and manage their teenagers’ use of the text-based platform.

The rollout, which began the week of September 15, extends supervision features already available on Meta’s other apps to Threads for the first time since the platform’s 2023 launch. Parents and guardians can now access the new tools through Meta’s Family Centre dashboard, similar to controls already in place on Instagram and Facebook.

What the controls allow

Under the new system, parents can view how much time their teen has spent on Threads each day over the previous week, along with the average daily usage for that period. They can set daily time limits that apply across all of a teen’s devices, and block access during specific days or hours.

The tools also include a default nighttime restriction, which mutes notifications and enables auto-replies on teen accounts between 10 pm and 7 am; parents can adjust this sleep-mode setting alongside other usage restrictions. Beyond time management, parents will get additional oversight of Teen Accounts, which already come with built-in protections such as private-by-default settings and limits on the type of content shown. Meta said parents will be able to decide whether teens under 16 can loosen any of these default settings themselves.

Part of a wider child-safety push

Alongside the Threads rollout, Meta said it will now report child safety-related matters directly to the Cybercrime portal run by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C). A company spokesperson said protecting children on its platforms remains a priority and reiterated Meta’s commitment to working with the government to hold perpetrators of such crimes accountable.

Meta said the supervision tools will continue to expand over time, with the stated goal of giving parents visibility into their teenagers’ experience across all of its apps from a single place.
