Missiles and drones reportedly launched from the direction of Iran struck near an airport in the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan on Thursday, according to a source close to the Azerbaijan government cited by Reuters.

The projectiles fell within the territory of Nakhchivan International Airport, triggering a fire in the area, the source said. An official statement from Azerbaijani authorities was expected to follow. It was not immediately clear how many missiles or drones had struck the vicinity.

Video shared by Israeli media appeared to show an explosion near a parking area close to the airport, which lies roughly 10 kilometres from the Iranian border.

Footage obtained by Reuters also showed thick black smoke rising near the airport terminal. The report added that a second drone landed near a school in the surrounding area.

According to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, two people were injured in the incident, though no fatalities have been reported so far.

Following the attack, the Azerbaijani government summoned Iran’s ambassador and warned that it reserves the right to take “appropriate response measures.”

The incident comes amid escalating tensions in the region as the conflict involving Iran continues to widen beyond the Middle East.
