PM Modi hails US efforts, backs pathway to lasting peace

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday praised US President Donald Trump for his peace efforts in Gaza, shortly after Hamas announced that it had accepted several provisions of Trump’s 20-point peace plan.

“We welcome President Trump’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress. The release of hostages marks a significant step forward. India will continue to support all efforts towards a durable and just peace strongly,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

Earlier this week, Modi had publicly backed Trump’s initiative, calling it a “viable pathway” to sustainable peace between Israelis and Palestinians. “We welcome President Donald J. Trump’s announcement of a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict. It provides a viable pathway to long-term and sustainable peace, security, and development for the Palestinian and Israeli people, as also for the larger West Asian region. We hope that all concerned will come together behind President Trump’s initiative and support this effort to end conflict and secure peace,” Modi had posted. His endorsement was later reshared by Trump on his Truth Social platform.

On Friday night, Hamas said it accepted certain parts of Trump’s proposal, including an end to the war, Israel’s withdrawal, the release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners, aid and recovery efforts, and a firm stand against any Palestinian expulsion from Gaza.

The announcement came hours after Trump gave the group an ultimatum to agree to his plan by Sunday evening (US time) or face “all hell.”

Responding to Hamas’s partial acceptance, Trump urged Israel to immediately stop bombing Gaza to enable the safe release of hostages.

“Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the hostages out safely and quickly! Right now, it’s far too dangerous to do that. We are already in discussions on the details to be worked out. This is not about Gaza alone, this is about long sought PEACE in the Middle East,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

He also released a video message thanking countries such as Qatar, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan for their role in the process. Calling the development “a very special day,” the US president said, “Everybody was unified in wanting this war to end and seeing peace in the Middle East. We are very close to achieving that. Thank you all, and everybody will be treated fairly.”
