NDA alliance wins comfortable majority in Puducherry Assembly elections
N Rangasamy on Friday formally staked claim to form the next government in Puducherry after being unanimously elected leader of the NDA legislature party.
The AINRC chief met K Kailasanathan and submitted letters of support from alliance MLAs at the Raj Nivas, paving the way for the formation of a new NDA government in the Union Territory.
According to an official communication from the Lieutenant Governor’s office, the claim has been forwarded to Droupadi Murmu for approval.
Sources indicated that Rangasamy is likely to be sworn in as Chief Minister for the fifth time on May 13.
Rangasamy was accompanied by newly elected legislators from the NDA alliance, which secured a comfortable majority in the recently concluded Assembly elections.
The All India NR Congress emerged victorious in 12 of the 16 seats it contested, while the Bharatiya Janata Party won four of the 10 seats it fought.
Other NDA allies, including the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam
and Latchia Jananayaga Katchi, won one seat each, taking the alliance tally to 18 in the 30-member Assembly. The House will also include three nominated members.
On the opposition side, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam secured five seats, while the Congress managed one seat. Actor-politician Vijay’s TVK won two seats.
Earlier this week, Rangasamy had submitted his resignation as Chief Minister following the completion of the previous government’s term. With the NDA now comfortably placed, the veteran leader is set to continue his political dominance in Puducherry with another term in office.
