Jailed Kashmiri leader Engineer Rashid gets NIA nod for MP oath with conditions
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday gave its consent for jailed Kashmiri leader Sheikh Abdul Rashid, known as Engineer Rashid, to take oath as MP on July 5. Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh will pass an order on the plea on Tuesday on the interim bail plea of Rashid, who won the Lok Sabha Elections from the Baramulla constituency in Jammu and Kashmir.
The development came to the surface during the court proceedings when the Patiala House Court in Delhi was hearing the incarcerated Engineer Rashid’s application for a grant of interim bail or custody parole so that he could be sworn in as a member of the Lok Sabha.
NIA’s counsel said Rashid’s oath-taking would be subject to some conditions like not speaking to the media. He also stated that Rashid must complete everything within a day.
Rashid has been arrested in a 2017 Jammu and Kashmir terror funding case.
He had moved the court seeking interim bail or custody parole to take an oath and perform his parliamentary functions. A special court here on June 22 had adjourned the matter and asked the NIA to file its response.
Engineer Rashid defeated the former J&K Chief Minister and vice president of National Conference (NC), Omar Abdullah in north Kashmir’s Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency by a huge margin of over two lakh votes.
