Odisha government approves job reservation for ex-Agniveers

In a significant move to support veterans of the Agniveer scheme, the Odisha Cabinet approved a 10 percent reservation for ex-Agniveers in state uniformed services during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday.

State Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja announced the decision, highlighting that Agniveers receive one year of training followed by a four-year tenure in the military. Upon completion, some may be offered permanent commissions, while others do not secure further employment. The new policy will provide a 10 percent reservation in uniform services such as the Fire Services, Police, Excise, and Forest Departments.

The Cabinet approved the Odisha ex-Agniveers (Recruitment to Uniform Services) Rules, 2024, which aims to enhance job prospects for ex-Agniveers in these sectors. This reservation will apply to Group “C” and “D” posts in direct recruitment and will be additional to the existing reservation for ex-servicemen. Candidates will need to meet the prescribed qualifications for the positions.

Additionally, the Cabinet endorsed a three-year relaxation in the upper age limit for ex-Agniveers and exempted them from the physical efficiency test, further facilitating their entry into uniformed services.

In other decisions, the Cabinet amended the Odisha Civil Services (Recruitment and Appointment) Rules, 2020, to extend compassionate appointments to daughters and step-daughters of deceased government employees, regardless of their marital status, provided they can prove dependency.

The Cabinet also approved the signing of the Revised Concession Agreement between the Directorate of Ports and Inland Water Transport and Gopalpur Ports Ltd., marking a key development in the state’s infrastructure sector.
