PM Modi chairs CCS meet after visiting blast victims; NIA probe points to 26/11-style plot

Two days after the deadly explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort that killed nine people and injured over a dozen others, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday evening chaired a high-level security meeting at his residence, 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, to review the national security situation and assess the ongoing investigation.

Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh were among the key attendees at the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting, which comes amid heightened concerns over an emerging terror plot linked to the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

The blast occurred on Monday evening near the Lal Quila Metro Station, when a Hyundai i20 car exploded amid slow-moving traffic, leaving a trail of destruction. The explosion killed at least nine people and injured over twenty others.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) handed over the probe to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) after preliminary findings indicated a terror conspiracy. The NIA has formed a special investigation team led by senior officers of Superintendent of Police rank and above.

    JeM-linked network planned 26/11-style attacks

According to top intelligence sources, the attack was part of a Jaish-e-Mohammed-backed module that had been preparing for a series of coordinated blasts across Delhi, Gurugram, and Faridabad — inspired by the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

Investigators believe the group had assembled nearly 200 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), intending to unleash large-scale chaos targeting major public and religious landmarks, including Red Fort, India Gate, Constitution Club, Gauri Shankar Temple, as well as railway stations and shopping malls across the country.

Officials say the plot was aimed at triggering communal unrest by striking at symbols of India’s heritage and unity.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi returned from a two-day official visit to Bhutan and drove directly to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital in central Delhi to meet those injured in Monday’s explosion.

In a social media post, he said,

“Went to LNJP Hospital and met those injured during the blast in Delhi. Praying for everyone’s quick recovery. Those behind the conspiracy will be brought to justice.”

At the hospital, the Prime Minister was briefed by doctors and security officials on the victims’ condition and the treatment being provided.
