Calls for moral, accountable and inclusive AI as global leaders gather in New Delhi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday outlined India’s “MANAV” vision for artificial intelligence while addressing global leaders at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.
Speaking at the summit, PM Modi said MANAV — the Hindi word for “human” — represents five core principles: a Moral and Ethical system; Accountable governance; National sovereignty, particularly over data; Accessible and Inclusive technology; and Valid and Legitimate systems.
Comparing artificial intelligence to the invention of wireless communication, the Prime Minister described AI as a historic transformation in human civilisation.
“When signals were first transmitted wirelessly, no one imagined that the entire world would one day be connected in real time. Artificial Intelligence is such a transformation,” he said, adding that the speed and scale of AI’s impact are unprecedented.
He emphasised that AI is not merely about making machines intelligent but about expanding human capability. “We are entering an era where humans and intelligence systems co-create, co-work and co-evolve,” he said.
Global participation at Bharat Mandapam
The five-day summit, being held at Bharat Mandapam from February 16 to 20, has drawn over 500 global AI leaders, 150 academics and researchers, and around 400 chief technology officers and industry executives.
PM Modi also welcomed global dignitaries including Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.
The summit is expected to deliberate on AI governance, ethical frameworks, innovation, and global cooperation in emerging technologies.
