Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday departed from New Delhi on a three-nation tour covering Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman, aimed at strengthening India’s diplomatic, economic and strategic engagement with West Asia and Africa.

The tour begins with a two-day visit to Jordan from December 15 to 16, undertaken at the invitation of King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein. During his stay, Prime Minister Modi will hold talks with the Jordanian monarch to review the full spectrum of bilateral relations and exchange views on regional developments.

The visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Jordan, a milestone expected to impart fresh momentum to bilateral cooperation. The Prime Minister will also interact with members of the Indian community in Jordan.

In his departure statement, Modi said he was embarking on a visit to three countries with which India shares deep civilisational bonds and robust contemporary partnerships.

The second leg of the tour will take the Prime Minister to Ethiopia from December 16 to 17, marking his first-ever visit to the African nation. In Addis Ababa, which also hosts the headquarters of the African Union, Modi will hold detailed discussions with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali on all aspects of bilateral ties.

The Prime Minister will also address a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament and interact with the Indian diaspora. Recalling India’s G20 presidency, Modi noted that the African Union’s admission as a permanent G20 member in 2023 underscored India’s commitment to amplifying the voice of the Global South.

The Ministry of External Affairs said the Ethiopia visit would reaffirm the shared commitment of both countries, as partners in the Global South, to deepen friendship and expand bilateral cooperation.

In the final leg of the tour, Prime Minister Modi will visit Oman from December 17 to 18 at the invitation of Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. This will be his second visit to the Sultanate.

In Muscat, Modi will hold talks with the Omani leadership to strengthen the India–Oman Strategic Partnership, with a focus on trade, investment, energy, defence, security and people-to-people ties. He will also address the Indian diaspora, which has played a significant role in Oman’s development.

The MEA noted that the visit coincides with 70 years of India–Oman diplomatic relations and follows the Sultan of Oman’s State visit to India in December 2023. Both sides are expected to review cooperation across multiple sectors and exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
