Authorities invoke terror and explosives laws as probe into deadly Red Fort blast intensifies
The Delhi Police have registered a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the Explosives Act, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the Red Fort blast that killed at least 10 people and injured several others on Monday evening.
The blast, which occurred in a white Hyundai i20 car near the historic Red Fort, has prompted a high-level probe by multiple agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).
Case registered under UAPA and Explosives Act
According to the Delhi Police, a formal FIR has been lodged at the Kotwali Police Station.
“A case has been registered under Sections 16 and 18 of the UAPA, along with provisions of the Explosives Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,” officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The stringent UAPA provisions indicate that investigators suspect terror involvement behind the explosion.
Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that the blast took place around 7 pm near the Subhash Marg traffic signal close to the Red Fort.
“This evening, around 7 pm, a blast occurred in a Hyundai i20 car at the Subhash Marg traffic signal near the Red Fort in Delhi. The blast injured some pedestrians and damaged vehicles. Preliminary reports indicate that some people have lost their lives,” Shah told ANI.
He added that within 10 minutes of receiving the information, teams from the Delhi Crime Branch and Special Branch arrived at the spot.
“I have spoken to the Delhi CP and the Special Branch in-charge. We are exploring all possibilities and conducting a thorough investigation. All options will be examined immediately, and the results will be presented to the public,” the Home Minister said.
Police commissioner confirms casualties and vehicle explosion
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha stated that the explosion occurred when a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light near the Red Fort Metro Station.
“At around 6:52 pm, an explosion happened in that vehicle, damaging nearby cars. All agencies—FSL, NIA, and others—are on the scene. Some people have died, and several have been injured. The situation is being closely monitored,” Golcha said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken stock of the situation and spoken to Home Minister Amit Shah for updates, government sources said.
Doctors at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital confirmed that 15 injured people were brought in after the blast.
“Eight victims were declared dead on arrival. Three are critically injured, and one is in stable condition,” said the hospital’s Medical Superintendent.
Investigation widens amid security alert
Security around the Red Fort area and nearby metro stations has been tightened. The Delhi Police’s Special Cell, Crime Branch, and anti-terror units are jointly investigating the explosion.
Investigators are working to determine whether the blast was accidental or deliberate, as early reports suggest possible links to a terror module under watch in recent weeks.
