Court upholds order over disputed Collectorate land

The Saharanpur district administration on Saturday demolished a portion of a mosque located inside the Collectorate premises, following a court ruling that upheld an earlier order directing the removal of the structure from government land. The demolition was carried out amid heavy police deployment across the area.

The action followed the District Judge’s decision earlier this week rejecting a petition challenging the City Magistrate’s July order. The lower court had held that the disputed property belonged to the government and directed that the premises be vacated.

According to the July order, the structure stood on around 315 square metres of government land recorded under Khasra No. 539 in the name of the Collectorate. The City Magistrate had also imposed a penalty of approximately ₹6.41 crore on the occupants over alleged encroachment and ordered removal of the structure within 30 days.

The administration sealed the mosque on Friday night before beginning the demolition operation. Entry points around the Collectorate were restricted, while personnel from more than 10 police stations and the Provincial Armed Constabulary were deployed to prevent any law-and-order disturbance.

The dispute centres on the legal status of the land and the structure located within a sensitive government office complex. Authorities have maintained that the mosque occupied government property, while representatives of the Muslim side have disputed the administration’s interpretation of the earlier order.

The mosque’s representatives have argued that the City Magistrate’s order called for vacating the premises but did not specifically direct the demolition of the religious structure. They have indicated that the matter would be pursued before the Allahabad High Court.

The development has also triggered a political response. Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Hasan alleged that she was placed under house arrest ahead of a proposed visit to Saharanpur, while other opposition leaders criticised the administration’s action and called for the dispute to be pursued through legal channels.

The administration has maintained a strong security presence around the Collectorate as the situation remains politically sensitive. The demolition marks the implementation of the court-backed eviction process concerning the disputed structure.
