SC puts hold on UP govt’s Kanwar Yatra diktat, says owners need to display type of food not names

On Monday, the Supreme Court upheld the UP government’s directives making the display of owners’ names on eateries along the Kanwar route mandatory.

The top court has issued a notice to all the states where such yatras take place.

The top court has also issued notice to Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi seeking their response on a batch of petitions alleging that the state government’s decision are violative of the constitutional provision and against secularism.

The matter will be next heard on July 26.

In an interim order, the top court has ruled that Uttar Pradesh police cannot compel shopkeepers to display their names. Instead, they can only require the display of food items.

A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and S V N Bhatt was hearing petitions filed against the said directive. One of these was filed by TMC MP Mahua Moitra.

The top court said, “Do not force the owners of eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display their names outside shops.”

It further said, “We deem it appropriate to pass an interim order prohibiting the enforcement of the above directives. In other words, food sellers may be required to display kind of food, but must not be forced to display names of owners, staff employed.”

The Kanwar Yatra originates from Kumbhnagari, Haridwar. Each year, during the month of Sawan, millions of Shiva devotees flock to Haridwar to collect the sacred waters of the Ganga.

  1. Courts are being weaponized by the opposition, the hizab is ok to be used in schools and colleges but will it be allowed in the courts? Then display of names on the shops can be stayed , can it be stayed for judges, lawyers, doctors and other professionals where the display believe is mandatory? Well if the courts are allowing themselves to be weaponized, what can we do? Generally everyone who claims to be independent is anti establishment, which is good when the establishment is a set of thieves but that not how it happens when the independents are part of the establishment..

  2. SC decision is very good. They should now take over the parliament & take over the role of executive. Long live SC. Its collapse is very near & judgesare going to be trolled like any other & shame them.
