PM Modi said Gen-Z is key to India’s space and startup revolution

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India’s young generation—especially Gen-Z—was transforming the country’s space sector by embracing new opportunities with enthusiasm and placing national interest above everything else. He made the remarks on Thursday while virtually inaugurating the Infinity Campus of Indian private space startup Skyroot Aerospace in Hyderabad via video conferencing.

Young startups fuelling a private space boom

PM Modi said that more than 300 space startups were now injecting new momentum into India’s space journey. He noted that many of these ventures had begun in modest rented rooms with limited resources, driven only by ambition and resolve.

He said that this spirit had sparked a private space revolution in India, powered by young engineers, coders, designers and scientists who were building advanced technologies such as propulsion systems, composite materials, rocket stages, satellite platforms and launch vehicles—areas that Indian startups once never imagined entering.

Gen-Z at the core of India’s startup surge

The Prime Minister linked the success of the space sector to a wider startup wave that had spread across India in the last decade. He said young innovators, particularly from Gen-Z, had been building new-age capabilities across sectors like FinTech, AgriTech, HealthTech, ClimateTech, EduTech and DefenceTech.

He praised Gen-Z for their creativity, optimism, and capacity-building mindset, saying they had the potential to inspire global youth and even motivate young innovators beyond India.

    India’s ranking: Third-largest startup ecosystem

PM Modi said India had become the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world, driven by its young innovators, with more than 1.5 lakh registered startups and multiple unicorns. He said the rise of startups from small towns and villages—beyond major metros—reflected growing confidence, wider participation and unprecedented reach among India’s youth.

‘Vikram-I’ unveiled, India’s private space milestones highlighted

During the event, PM Modi also unveiled Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-I, the company’s first orbital rocket, designed to launch satellites into orbit.

The Skyroot Aerospace Infinity Campus includes nearly 2 lakh sq. ft. of workspace dedicated to designing, developing, integrating and testing multiple launch vehicles. The facility has a capability to produce one orbital rocket per month, with a target capacity of building one rocket every month.

Skyroot Aerospace, founded by Pawan Chandana and Bharath Dhaka—both alumni of IITs and former scientists at ISRO—is widely recognised as India’s leading private space company. In November 2022, the company successfully launched its sub-orbital rocket Vikram-S, becoming the first Indian private firm to launch a rocket to space.
