Meghnad, Sonam Wangchuk slam CJP over viral celebration videos
The controversy surrounding videos of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders dancing and celebrating after former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan‘s resignation has intensified, with activist Sonam Wangchuk and several supporters of the movement questioning the timing and optics of the celebrations.
Wangchuk, who had observed a hunger strike at the CJP protest site, urged restraint while responding to the viral videos.
“Victory must be accompanied by humility,” he said, adding that celebrations should be marked by “dignity, restraint, and responsibility.” He stressed that maintaining respect and humility is as important as achieving success.
His remarks come amid widespread criticism over videos showing senior CJP leaders celebrating shortly after the month-long protest at Jantar Mantar concluded.
The controversy has also triggered dissent within the party’s own support base.
Commentator and YouTuber Meghnad, a founding member of the online platform associated with CJP, sharply criticised the celebrations, alleging that many protesters were left stranded without adequate support after the protest ended.
In a social media post, Meghnad claimed that he and several others personally arranged transport and food for dozens of volunteers and protesters who had been camping at Jantar Mantar for over a month.
“I’m seeing this at 4 am. Me and a few others have spent the last two days sending abandoned and starving CJP volunteers and protesters home with our own money… I saw this video, and I’m pissed off,” he wrote.
He further alleged that while the leadership celebrated, many protesters remained without basic assistance.
“While you are partying, 70-plus protesters and students were left starving in Delhi because you decided not to care. Congratulations CJP, you have become just another political party after all,” Meghnad said.
Responding to the backlash, CJP defended the celebrations, arguing that the videos reflected the culture and confidence of a younger generation.
Party spokesperson Saurav Das said on X that the movement’s volunteers could “protest while dancing” and “organise while sipping cold coffee,” adding that such expressions were natural for Gen Z.
The viral videos, however, continue to fuel political debate online, with critics arguing that the celebrations sent the wrong message immediately after a prolonged public protest.
