Voting on April 23, results on May 4
The National Democratic Alliance on Monday finalised its seat-sharing agreement for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, allocating 27 seats to the Bharatiya Janata Party, 18 seats to the Pattali Makkal Katchi, and 11 seats to the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam.
The pact was sealed at the headquarters of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Chennai, in the presence of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who is the BJP’s election in-charge for the state.
Other leaders present included Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss, and AMMK general secretary T. T. V. Dhinakaran.
Under the agreement, the AIADMK will contest 178 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, retaining the largest share within the alliance.
BJP gets more seats than 2021
The BJP has been allotted 27 seats, seven more than the 20 seats it contested in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, where the party won four constituencies.
“We are very happy. We have formed a very strong alliance… Our alliance is going to win the elections,” said Tamilisai Soundararajan.
AIADMK eyes stronger comeback
In the 2021 polls, the AIADMK contested 179 seats and secured 66 victories. Party leaders had earlier indicated that the AIADMK wanted to contest a large number of constituencies again to aim for a clear majority in the state.
Polling schedule
Voting for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections will be held in a single phase on April 23, with results to be announced on May 4 by the Election Commission of India. Results for other states, including West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, and the union territory of Puducherry, will also be declared the same day.
