Kerala Gym Sparks Outrage by Enforcing Regressive ‘Sharia-Compliant’ Restrictions
A fitness center in Puthunagaram, Palakkad, has drawn severe public backlash after announcing plans to transform into a regressive, “Islam-friendly” facility operating under strict Sharia-based mandates. The sudden move has ignited a fierce debate across Kerala regarding the creeping imposition of religious orthodoxy into secular public spaces.
The controversial announcement—which was hastily deleted from Instagram following intense public outrage—was posted by ‘Nawaz Muthu T‘. It revealed that the gym, a community fixture for 15 years, is abandoning its standard operations to enforce an aggressive new code of religious conduct on its members.
Mandated Segregation and Rigid Controls
Under the guise of becoming the state’s first “Islam-friendly gym,” the management is introducing sweeping restrictions that heavily compromise the standard, open environment of a modern fitness center:
- Enforced Dress Codes: Members will be legally subjected to religious policing regarding their attire. Men and women will be forced to cover their awrah (body parts mandated to be hidden under Islamic guidelines) while exercising.
- Forced Hijabs for Women: Female members will no longer have personal autonomy over their workout gear; they will be strictly required to wear full-coverage clothing, including the hijab.
- Strict Gender Segregation: The management is dismantling co-ed fitness by completely banning men and women from working out together, forcing them into rigidly separated schedules.
- A Ban on Music: In an bizarrely restrictive move for a fitness center, music of any kind will be entirely banned inside the premises.
Public Backlash and Deeper Concerns
While religious apologists have attempted to defend the move as merely catering to “preferences,” critics and secular voices have raised serious alarms. The decision to scrub the announcement video from Instagram underscores the toxic nature of the controversy, but it has done little to quiet the growing unease.
The backlash extends far beyond simple venue rules. Skeptics are questioning the true motives behind this sudden ideological shift, raising concerns over whether a standard community fitness center is being weaponized to promote religious insularity.
