White House confirms there are “no immediate plans” for a Trump-Putin summit

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he decided to delay face-to-face talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, citing Moscow’s refusal to agree to a ceasefire along the current front line in Ukraine. Speaking at the White House, Trump said he did not want a “wasted meeting” that produced no meaningful progress toward peace.

Earlier, the White House confirmed there were “no plans” for a Trump-Putin summit “in the immediate future,” despite Trump’s earlier statement that the two leaders would meet in Budapest within two weeks. The move signals a cooling of expectations for renewed dialogue between Washington and Moscow, as key differences over Ukraine’s future continue to divide the two sides.

“I think it was clear that the Russians wanted too much,” a senior European diplomat told Reuters, suggesting the US realized “there will be no deal for Trump in Budapest.”

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was also called off, though both sides described their recent phone conversation as “productive.”

On Monday, Trump expressed support for a ceasefire proposal backed by Kyiv and European allies that would freeze the conflict along existing battle lines. “Let it be cut the way it is,” he said. “Cut and stop at the battle line. Go home. Stop fighting, stop killing people.”

Moscow, however, dismissed the proposal. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia’s position “doesn’t change,” reiterating its demand for a full withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from eastern regions. Lavrov added that Moscow sought a “long-term, sustainable peace” that addressed the “root causes of the conflict” — a reference to Russia’s insistence on recognition of sovereignty over the Donbas and the demilitarisation of Ukraine.

European leaders, in a joint statement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said any talks should begin with freezing the front line and accused Moscow of not being “serious” about peace. Zelensky described discussions on territorial lines as “the beginning of diplomacy,” but said Russia was actively avoiding it.

Reports also surfaced that Trump’s earlier talks with Zelensky were tense, with the US president allegedly urging Kyiv to cede parts of the Donbas in exchange for peace — a suggestion Zelensky has repeatedly rejected.

Putin’s recent call with Trump came amid speculation that the US was preparing to supply long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, capable of striking deep inside Russian territory. Zelensky said the missile discussions had “forced Russia to engage in diplomacy,” even if the summit did not materialise.

The decision to postpone the Trump-Putin meeting appears aimed at avoiding another inconclusive encounter, similar to their last meeting in Alaska in August, which ended without tangible outcomes.
