Victims’ identities yet to be released as detectives probe motive
A weekend party in rural Robeson County, southeastern North Carolina, turned tragic after a mass shooting left two people dead and several others critically injured.
According to Sheriff Burnis Wilkins, the incident occurred late Friday night in a rural area outside Maxton, about 95 miles southwest of Raleigh near the South Carolina border.
The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a total of 13 people were shot. Law enforcement officials and investigators rushed to the scene shortly after receiving reports of gunfire. “There is no current threat to the community as this appears to have been an isolated incident,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Authorities said more than 150 people fled the scene before officers arrived, making it difficult for investigators to collect evidence and eyewitness accounts. The sheriff’s office has appealed to anyone with information about the shooting or who attended the party to contact investigators.
As of Saturday, the names of the deceased and the injured have not been released, and no arrests have been made. Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation to determine the motive and identify those responsible for the deadly attack.
Further updates on the Robeson County shooting are awaited as the investigation progresses.
