Series of attacks on BJP convoys raise political tensions in Bengal
The convoy of Union Minister of State for Education and former West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar was allegedly attacked by Trinamool Congress (TMC) activists in Nabadwip, Nadia district, on Wednesday night.
According to reports, Majumdar had been attending several party programmes in the district earlier in the day. His convoy was reportedly caught amid a violent clash between TMC and BJP supporters while he was returning from the event. During the ensuing chaos, one of the vehicles in his convoy was allegedly attacked by ruling party workers.
Majumdar claimed the assault was “totally unprovoked” and accused local TMC leaders and activists, whom he alleged were inebriated, of orchestrating the attack. He further claimed that several BJP workers accompanying him were beaten up by ruling party-backed goons, with some sustaining serious injuries.
At the time of filing this report, Majumdar’s convoy had safely left the area.
Trinamool denies involvement
The local Trinamool Congress leadership, however, denied the allegations.
Biman Saha, chairman of the TMC-run Nabadwip Municipality, said the violence erupted near the Nabadwip bus stand after BJP supporters allegedly attacked a local office of INTTUC, the TMC’s trade union wing.
Saha claimed that when INTTUC supporters gathered to protest, they were attacked again by BJP workers, leading to further clashes between the two groups.
Pattern of political violence in Bengal
The incident adds to a growing list of attacks targeting BJP leaders’ convoys in West Bengal in recent months.
In October, BJP MP Raju Bista’s convoy was attacked in Darjeeling’s Sukhia Pokhari area, allegedly by TMC supporters.
Last month, Khagen Murmu, BJP’s Lok Sabha MP from Malda (Uttar), was injured when his vehicle was attacked in Jalpaiguri district. Murmu is still undergoing treatment for his injuries.
These recurring confrontations have further heightened political tensions in the state as both parties continue to trade accusations of violence.
