Trump warns Europe over Hormuz security responsibility

US President Donald Trump sharply criticised American allies for failing to support Washington during its ongoing military operations against Iran, saying countries dependent on the Strait of Hormuz should take responsibility for protecting the crucial oil route.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said the United States should not bear the burden of securing the strategic maritime chokepoint that carries a major share of global oil shipments.

Go get your own oil,” he said, adding that protecting the strait was “not for us” and should instead be handled by nations that rely on it, including France.

Conflict pushes oil prices higher

The remarks come amid rising tensions in the Middle East following military operations by the United States and Israel against Iran.

Recent US strikes reportedly targeted the Iranian city of Isfahan, while Tehran responded by attacking a Kuwaiti oil tanker in the Persian Gulf. More than a month into the conflict, over 3,000 people have reportedly been killed and global energy supplies have been disrupted.

Oil markets have reacted sharply, with Brent crude trading near USD 107 per barrel — up more than 45 per cent since the conflict began.

European allies distance themselves

Several European partners have chosen to stay out of the military campaign. Spain closed its airspace to US aircraft linked to the conflict, while Italy reportedly denied the use of the Naval Air Station Sigonella for an operation related to the offensive.

However, Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said the United States still has access to other Italian bases and that bilateral ties remain unchanged.

Trump also signalled that US military operations could wind down within the next two to three weeks, even as tensions in the region continue to impact global oil markets.
