Munir’s Tehran visit comes as US-Iran tensions intensify and Pakistan pushes for diplomacy
Pakistan Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Monday for talks with Iranian officials, with Iran describing the visit as taking place within the framework of the “very good and distinguished relations” between the two countries. The visit comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran and growing efforts to push for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
Munir travelled to Tehran along with Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. Pakistan’s military said the visit was part of Islamabad’s efforts to promote regional peace and stability. Iran’s Foreign Ministry had earlier said Munir would lead an official delegation and hold talks with senior Iranian officials.
Munir visit comes amid fresh US pressure on Iran
The visit comes at a particularly sensitive time, with Washington preparing fresh economic sanctions against Tehran. US officials have described the planned measures as among the toughest sanctions against Iran, while Tehran has threatened retaliatory action, including a possible halt to oil exports through the Gulf.
Pakistan has been attempting to play a mediating role in the US-Iran crisis. Reuters reported that Munir also spoke with US President Donald Trump last week, shortly before his Tehran visit. According to Pakistani sources cited by Reuters, Trump urged Pakistan to use its influence to encourage Iran to return to negotiations.
Iranian officials have said Munir’s visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and continuing Pakistan’s “good offices” in support of peace and security in the region. Pakistan had earlier helped broker a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran in June, although subsequent peace efforts stalled.
