15 flights diverted as heavy rain disrupts airport operations and traffic
Heavy rain and thunderstorms lashed Delhi-NCR on Monday, disrupting flight operations at the city’s airport and causing traffic congestion and waterlogging in several areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for heavy rainfall and a yellow alert for moderate rain across several districts of the national capital.
A total of 15 flights, including three international flights, were diverted from Delhi airport due to the adverse weather. Twelve flights were diverted to Jaipur, while two landed in Chandigarh and one in Lucknow. Several airlines, including Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet and Akasa Air, issued advisories asking passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport.
Heavy rain, thunderstorms disrupt Delhi
Intense showers were reported from South Delhi and nearby areas, while several stretches experienced waterlogging and slow-moving traffic. The IMD warned of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and winds of 30-40 kmph in several parts of Delhi.
The alert covers South East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi and North Delhi. Moderate rain, along with thunderstorms, lightning and similar wind speeds, is also likely in several other parts of the city.
Weather forecaster India Met Sky said scattered spells of heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds could affect parts of Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurugram, East Delhi and South Delhi. Similar spells are expected over the next two days, after which conditions are likely to turn hot and humid.
The heavy rain also led to traffic congestion in parts of Delhi-NCR, with residents reporting waterlogging on social media.
