Dera chief of Uttarakhand’s Nanakmatta Sahib Gurdwara shot dead, had claimed threat to life
Nanakmatta Gurudwara Kar Sewa Pramukh (chief) Baba Tarsem Singh was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Uttarakhand’s Nanakmatta town of Udham Singh Nagar on Thursday morning, police said.
According to police, the two bike-borne assailants fired indiscriminately at Baba Tarsem Singh inside the dera at around 6:30 am.
Singh was taken to a hospital in Khatima where he was declared dead on arrival.
Udham Singh Nagar senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manjunath T C was at the site taking stock of the situation.
Uttarakhand additional director general of police (Law and Order) A P Anshuman said, “Two identified assailants who came on a bike opened fire at Nanakmatta Gurdwara Kar Sewa Pramukh Baba Tarsem Singh inside the dera at around 6:30 am. We have deployed several police teams, along with the special task force (STF), to nab the killers. We will also constitute a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the murder.”
“The law-and-order situation is normal in the area,” he said.
Nanakmatta Gurudwara, also known as Nanakmatta Sahib, is a Sikh pilgrimage site and holds significant historical and religious importance for Sikhs.
In a Facebook post, Baba Tarsem Singh, on February 16, had alleged his life was under threat. He also alleged the Facebook page of the Gurudwara committee levelled serious malicious accusations against him and misled the organization.
Singh, through his post, also appealed that any complaints against him should be discussed in person, rather than defaming him on social media. He also said the supporters of the committee posed a threat to his life and that they should be held responsible if anything happened to him.
