Congress leader under fire for ‘Trump kidnapping PM’ remark

Senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan has triggered a political storm after drawing a controversial comparison between India and Venezuela while criticising US trade policy, prompting sharp reactions from the BJP and widespread ridicule on social media.

Speaking on the impact of steep US tariffs on Indian exports, Chavan raised a hypothetical question invoking recent developments in Venezuela. “The question then is: what next? Will something like what happened in Venezuela happen in India? Will Mr Trump kidnap our prime minister?” he asked.

Chavan argued that a proposed 50 per cent tariff by the United States would effectively choke bilateral trade, particularly Indian exports. “With a 50 per cent tariff, trade is simply not possible. In effect, this amounts to blocking India-US trade,” he said, adding that India would have to bear the consequences and seek alternative markets.

The remarks drew immediate backlash, with critics calling the comparison humiliating for the country. Former Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police SP Vaid strongly condemned the statement, saying it insulted India’s sovereignty and democratic stature.

“Thinking that what Trump did to Venezuela and Maduro should happen to Narendra Modi is humiliating for the entire country. At least think before you speak,” Vaid said, questioning whether such remarks reflected the Congress party’s ideology.

Chavan’s comments came a day after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over US President Donald Trump’s remarks on India’s purchase of Russian oil. Kharge accused the Prime Minister of yielding to external pressure and warned against what he described as the expansionist tendencies of global powers.

  1. Trump will not last beyond three years at best, but India has resilience to last much beyond no matter what Trump tries during those years. Unfortunately the opposition is so disappointed and frustrated that all they can hope for is kidnapping, death and grave digging for MODI
