Again, there seems to be a sort of indecision in gender-defining a Hindi noun. While the cartoon speak bubble says, “अब रेल पटरी से नहीं उतरेगी”, the comment outside and below it says, “अब रेल पटरी से नहीं उतरेगा”!
It is not quite rare for such an indecision to crop up, as different people do define and decide differently in many such circumstances. The online Shabdkosh (?more reliable) calls रेल masculine, but the Wiktionary (welcome to further editing) labels the same feminine. It is worthwhile to regard, recall, and rejoice at, how several Indian (Hindi) cricketers have differed from their Pakistani counterparts in handling commonly used nouns, English as well as Hindi/Urdu, as we have watched them live on TV!
But what is the catch here? The same entity, namely, the cartoon, speaks differently at the same place! This at least reflects here not a very good coordination in work…
श्रीमान अश्विन लोहानी, जब पटरी ही नहीं रही*, तब किसी पटरी से उतरने या नहीं उतरने की बात ही कहाँ से उठी?
