MEA Demands End to Shipping Attacks After 11 Indians Injured Off Oman Coast

India on Tuesday condemned an attack on the Panama-flagged commercial vessel MT On Peace, which was struck by a projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman, leaving 12 crew members injured, including 11 Indian nationals.

    Details of the attack

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the vessel was carrying 19 crew members in total, of whom 17 were Indian nationals. With assistance from Omani authorities, the injured crew were evacuated and are receiving medical treatment in Khasab, Oman. The MEA reiterated its call for an immediate end to such attacks on commercial shipping, in the interest of peace and stability in the region, and urged safe navigation in international waterways.

Part of a wider pattern of attacks near Hormuz

Tuesday’s incident is the latest in a long series of attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waters since the outbreak of the Iran war earlier this year — attacks that have repeatedly involved Indian crew members given the large share of Indian seafarers working on international shipping routes through the Gulf. Just days earlier, on October 3, the MEA said it had coordinated the rescue of five Indian nationals aboard the Kuwait-flagged tanker MT Kazimah III after it too was struck by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz.

Other recent incidents in the same waters have included the March 1 strike on the oil tanker Skylight north of Khasab, Oman, which killed two Indian crew members and injured three others, and a June 2026 attack on the Cyprus-flagged container ship GFS Galaxy, which CENTCOM attributed to Iran and which caused the vessel’s crew, including 11 Indian nationals, to abandon ship. The Strait of Hormuz — a vital corridor connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea — has seen dozens of such attacks and vessel seizures since the conflict began, prompting some shipping operators to explore alternative routes and ship-to-ship transfers off Oman to reduce their exposure.

The identity and motive of those responsible for Tuesday’s attack on the MT On Peace have not been disclosed.
