Dera chief leaves Sunaria jail as repeated temporary releases trigger fresh scrutiny
Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been released from Haryana’s Sunaria jail on a 21-day furlough, marking his 17th temporary release since his 2017 conviction. He left the Rohtak jail around 6:05 am on Tuesday under tight security and is expected to stay at the Dera headquarters in Sirsa during the furlough.
Ram Rahim is serving a 20-year prison sentence for raping two women disciples. He was convicted by a special CBI court in Panchkula in 2017 and was sentenced to two consecutive 10-year terms in the rape cases. He is also serving a life sentence in connection with the murder of former Dera manager Ranjit Singh.
Third temporary release this year
The latest release is Ram Rahim’s 17th parole or furlough overall. Earlier this year, he was granted 40 days in January and another 30 days in May. His repeated temporary releases have frequently drawn public and political scrutiny, particularly given his substantial following in Haryana and Punjab.
