Kolkata doctor rape-murder case: Governor’s report poised to intensify scrutiny on West Bengal Govt

West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose arrived in Delhi on Tuesday and is scheduled to meet with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The meeting will involve the submission of a report on the ongoing situation in West Bengal, following the rape and murder of a woman doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital earlier this month.

Political analysts suggest that the Governor’s report could intensify the scrutiny on the West Bengal state government, which has already faced criticism from Bose. During his visit to RG Kar Medical College last week, Bose expressed concerns about the state’s handling of the case, which involved interactions with protesting medical students and junior doctors.

The report’s anticipated impact has created unease within the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). Party leader Kunal Ghosh has voiced apprehensions, alleging that the Governor is under pressure from the Union government to draft a report that might undermine the democratically elected state government. Ghosh’s comments reflect growing tension between state and central authorities as the investigation continues.

The outcome of the Governor’s report and the subsequent meeting with Amit Shah could further shape the discourse surrounding the tragic incident and the state’s response.

On August 15, the Governor visited RG Kar Hospital and assured the protesting doctors and medical students of justice in the tragedy.

“Whatever happened at RG Kar during the last few days is a blot in the name of humanity. I will not tolerate such things at any cost. The demands of the protesting doctors are just that the real culprits should be nabbed and punished. Students are the future of the country. They should be given proper hearing,” the Governor said then.

He also said that maintaining law and order is the responsibility of the state government besides giving a call for everyone to be united for the sake of women’s safety.

There have been massive protests in West Bengal and a strike by doctors across the country over the case and allegations of a botched probe and cover-up.
