Shinde govt overturns decisions of MVA govt; restores direct election of sarpanch and also reduces VAT on fuel
Overturning the MVA-led Maharashtra government’s decision, the Eknath Shinde-led government restored the direct election for the Sarpanch’s post on Thursday. Earlier, When Devendra Fadnavis was the Chief Minister, he had taken the decision of the direct election model, which was scrapped by the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government in January 2020.
Addressing a press conference alongside the Maharashtra CM after the Cabinet meeting, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis explained that the demand of the Maharashtra State Sarpanch Parishad and other stakeholders had been taken into consideration. Meanwhile, a direct election will also be held for the post of president in Municipal Councils.
In yet another crucial move and relief to the common man, the Maharashtra government has decided to reduce the value-added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel by Rs.5 and Rs.3 per liter respectively, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said here on Thursday. The decision, to be implemented from Thursday midnight, would entail a burden of Rs.6,000 crore on the state exchequer.
CM Eknath Shinde said, “The Central government led by PM Modi had announced a reduction in VAT and also requested states to do the same so that people can get a double benefit. Some states took the decision whereas the previous government in Maharashtra did not. But today we are reducing fuel prices. Petrol will be reduced by Rs.5 and diesel by Rs.3. The inflation will go down with this and people will get relief.”
Dy CM Devendra Fadnavis said in a series of tweets, “Great relief to Maharashtrian & Marathi Manus! Happy to announce that the new Government under CM Eknathrao Shinde has decided to reduce Petrol & Diesel prices by Rs.5/litre & Rs.3/litre respectively. This is our step towards the appeal made by Hon PM Modi Ji for the benefit to common citizens. State will carry the burden of Rs.6000 crore for this decision.”
