Arvind Kejriwal refuses to make ‘The Kashmir Files’ tax-free, calls it “jhoothi” (fake) film, Twitterati’s hit out

Responding to the growing demand of the people to make ‘The Kashmir Files’ movie tax-free in Delhi, Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal asked filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri to make the film available for free on the video streaming platform YouTube.

Speaking at the Assembly, Kejriwal said, “The BJP should ask Vivek Agnihotri to upload it on YouTube and everyone will see it for free.” Furthermore, Kejriwal also insinuated that ‘The Kashmir Files’ is a movie not grounded in reality and that is a “jhoothi” movie.

‘The Kashmir Files’ which is based on true incidents of the brutal genocide of the Kashmiri Hindus, has been exempted from taxes in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Haryana.

Kejriwal went on to comment on the Prime Minister. Kejriwal said that even after ruling the country for eight years, the former has to take the help of the movie for political gains.

Prime Minister Modi had recently said the film has rattled the “entire ecosystem” which claims to be the torchbearer of freedom of expression but does not want the truth to be told.

Soon after Arvind Kejriwal’s bitter comments, the social media erupted with comments exposing Kejriwal’s stand on other commercial films. Notably, Kejriwal’s Delhi Government had earlier made several movies tax-free.

Notably, the Kejriwal government made Kabir Khan’s ‘83’ tax-free in December 2021, which has an objectionable scene that glorified the terror state of Pakistan.

Back in 2019, Arvind Kejriwal also declared the movie ‘Saand Ki Aankh’ and ‘Nil Batte Sannatta’ tax-free.

In a tweet made in October 2019, he wrote, “Delhi govt. gives tax-free status to the Taapsee Pannu & Bhumi Pednekar starrer Saand Ki Aankh in Delhi. The message of the movie should reach to people of every age, gender & background ― The power of a dream, & the power derived from it to achieve it, despite any socio-cultural blocks.”

Praising the movie ‘Nil Batte Sannatta’, he tweeted, “Nil Batte Sannatta is a great great movie. You must watch it. Tax-free in Delhi Really Swara.”

The BJP’s Delhi unit chief Adesh Gupta said that Kejriwal’s response showed his insensitivity towards the pain of Kashmiri Pandits. “The AAP had in the past supported the demand for a plebiscite by Kashmiri separatists. “So, appreciation for ‘The Kashmir Files’ movie cannot be expected from him (Kejriwal),” he said.

After Kejriwal’s insensitive comments, Twitterati’s hit out at him, with some even exposing screenshots from his previous tweets and some questioning his stand on the genocide of Kashmiri Hindus.

A Twitter user said, “Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal asks Vivek Agnihotri to upload movie on YouTube. Why tax-free on the movie and blaming other parties for advertising, then what about this?? Shame on you Ad CM for playing with sentiments.”

A Twitter tagged Kejriwal and questioned, “Films made tax-free by Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi: 1. 83 2. Saand Ki Aankh 3. Nil Battey Sannata Kejriwal insinuated that ‘The Kashmir Files’ is jhoothi (false) movie 83 showed Pak Army stopping firing to let Indian Army listen to the score of final match Did that happen? No.”

“Arvind Kejriwal says, ‘Why BJP wants the movie The Kashmir Files to be tax-free’? Ask Vivek Agnihotri to upload the movie on YouTube, Completely free for all! Okay! The Same Kejriwal, made “Kabir Khan’s 83” movie tax-free! With his logic, he could have asked Kabir Khan to upload”, said one Twitter handle.

  1. BJP is not silent, or unable to face him, but doesn’t want to elevate him to be a competitor.
I think BJP is doing the right thing at this time.
I think Kejriwal has shot himself in his foot, undoing the soft-Hindutva stance, by taking this anti-‘Kashmir Files’ position. Now, I think BJP will start attacking him at this vulnerable spot.
He’s a chameleon and could try to do a course correction.
Let’s see how things pan out on this.
