Macron and Netanyahu discuss tensions
French President Emmanuel Macron and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu engaged in a telephone conversation regarding the escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly following Macron’s call for an arms embargo on Israel.
The Elysee Palace released a statement indicating that both leaders recognized their differing views and expressed a mutual desire for improved understanding. During the call, Macron emphasized his belief that it is time for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict.
“The arms deliveries, the prolongation of the war in Gaza, and its extension to Lebanon cannot produce the security expected by the Israelis and by everyone in the region,” the statement quoted Macron as saying. He stressed the need for decisive efforts to create political solutions essential for the security of Israel and the broader Middle East.
As the first anniversary of Hamas’s attack on Israel approaches, Macron reaffirmed the solidarity of the French people with the Israeli population, particularly the victims, hostages, and their families.
Relations between France and Israel soured over the weekend after Macron’s comments during a radio interview, where he underscored the importance of prioritizing a political solution and called for halting arms supplies to Israel for its operations in Gaza.
Netanyahu responded strongly, criticizing Macron’s stance. “President Macron and other Western leaders are now advocating for arms embargoes on Israel. Shame on them,” he stated, asserting that Israel would prevail despite external pressures.
In response to the growing tensions, the French government announced that Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot would meet with Israeli officials on Monday to further address the situation.
