The deadly blast near Delhi’s Red Fort was a ‘Fidayeen’ (suicide) attack believed to have been carried out by Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), according to initial findings by the Delhi Police and central investigative agencies.

In a major breakthrough, investigators have identified the alleged mastermind behind Jaish’s women’s recruitment network in India — Dr Shaheen Shahid, an academic associated with Al-Falah University in Faridabad.

Jaish’s women’s wing exposed

Sources revealed that Dr Shaheen led the Jamaat-ul-Mominat, the women’s wing of Jaish-e-Mohammed, and was actively working to recruit and radicalize educated Indian women. She is believed to have operated under the direct command of Sadia Azhar, sister of JeM chief Masood Azhar, who manages the network from Pakistan.

Her arrest in Faridabad marks a significant breakthrough, with investigators now tracing her links to the wider terror module suspected of orchestrating the Red Fort suicide bombing.

Pulwama doctor behind suicide attack

The suspected bomber, Dr Umar Nabi, also from Pulwama (Jammu and Kashmir), allegedly triggered the explosion after learning that two of his associates — Dr Muzammil and Dr Aadil Rather — had been arrested in Faridabad with 360 kg of explosives and ammunition.

Police sources said Umar hastily executed the attack using a white Hyundai i20, which CCTV footage shows moving slowly near the Red Fort moments before the explosion. Investigators are probing whether the actual target was elsewhere.

The Red Fort explosion

The high-intensity blast occurred around 7:15 pm on Monday outside Gate No. 1 of Red Fort Metro Station, killing 12 people and injuring at least 25 others. The explosion triggered a fire that engulfed multiple vehicles in the parking area, sending shockwaves across the capital.

Teams from the Delhi Police, bomb disposal squads, and forensic experts immediately cordoned off the area. Officials initially suspected a CNG cylinder explosion or an IED, but evidence now points to a suicide bombing planned by JeM operatives.

The entire Red Fort zone remains sealed, and Delhi is under high alert as central agencies expand the investigation across Delhi, Haryana, and Jammu & Kashmir.
