
Jaishankar’s Kremlin meeting sets the stage for India–Russia summit
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin on Tuesday and briefed him on the preparations for the upcoming India–Russia annual summit. The meeting took place at the Representative Office of the Senate Palace, according to Russia’s state-run TASS agency.
Putin welcomed Jaishankar with a handshake, following which the Indian minister conveyed the greetings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a post on social media, Jaishankar said he apprised President Putin of the ongoing preparations for the summit and discussed key regional and global developments. He added that he valued the Russian leader’s perspectives on strengthening bilateral ties.
Senior Russian officials, including Deputy Chief of the Presidential Administration Maxim Oreshkin, Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov, Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov, and Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko, were present at the meeting.
The engagement comes ahead of Putin’s expected visit to India around December 5 for annual summit talks with Prime Minister Modi. On Monday, Jaishankar held detailed discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as part of the preparations for the 23rd India–Russia summit.
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar met President Putin along with heads of delegation from other SCO member states. The meeting was also attended by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and several regional leaders, including Belarus Prime Minister Alexander Turchin, Kazakhstan Prime Minister Oljas Bektenov, Kyrgyzstan Deputy PM Adylbek Kasymaliyev, Tajikistan PM Kokhir Rasulzoda, Uzbekistan PM Abdulla Aripov, Iranian Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref, Pakistan Deputy PM Ishaq Dar, and SCO Secretary General Nurlan Yermekbayev.
On the sidelines of the SCO meetings, Jaishankar held bilateral discussions with Mongolia’s Prime Minister Gombojavyn Zandanshatar and Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. He also thanked Russian Prime Minister Mishustin for hosting the SCO Heads of Government summit and acknowledged the hospitality extended to all delegations.
