RSS chief highlights inclusivity of Hindu culture during centenary celebrations in Assam

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said Hinduism is an inclusive cultural identity rather than a religion-bound concept, asserting that Muslims and Christians who honour India, follow its culture, and take pride in its ancestors are also “Hindus” in a civilizational sense. He made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing intellectuals, scholars, editors, writers, and entrepreneurs in Assam as part of the RSS’s centenary celebrations.

Bhagwat said those who uphold devotion to the motherland, respect India’s ancestors, and carry forward its cultural legacy fall within the broader definition of Hindu identity. “Hinduism should not be taken in religious connotations. Hinduism and Hindu culture are not food and worship. It is inclusive,” he said.

He elaborated on the RSS’s Panch Parivartan — social harmony, Kutumb Prabodhan (family awakening), civic discipline, self-reliance, and environmental protection — and placed strong emphasis on strengthening the family structure. He urged families to preserve ancestral stories and instil cultural responsibility in the younger generation.

Bhagwat highlighted icons such as Lachit Borphukan and Srimanta Shankardeva as national figures whose contributions transcend regional boundaries. He also recalled the role of RSS Swayamsevaks in the freedom struggle, including Dr. Hedgewar’s involvement in the Non-Cooperation and Civil Disobedience movements and the participation of numerous volunteers during the Quit India Movement.

Calling the Northeast a powerful example of India’s unity in diversity, Bhagwat urged citizens, particularly those present at the event, to work collectively and selflessly for nation-building.
