How Did He Enter the Classroom? Chainsaw Attack on Andhra Schoolgirls Sparks Outrage
A classroom in Andhra Pradesh turned into a scene of terror after a 21-year-old man allegedly stormed a government school with a chainsaw and attacked two Class 10 students during a lesson. One girl sustained critical injuries, while another was hurt trying to intervene.
The horrifying incident took place at around 10.30 am on Saturday at Zilla Parishad High School in Raptadu village, in Anantapur district. A teacher was reportedly present in the classroom when the accused entered and launched the attack.
The critically injured student was rushed to the Government General Hospital in Anantapur for emergency treatment. She was undergoing critical medical care, with arrangements reportedly being made to shift her to a hospital in Bengaluru for further treatment. The second student also sustained injuries while attempting to protect her classmate.
The accused has been identified in preliminary police information as Hemanth, alias Dummu. He allegedly fled the school after the assault but was subsequently arrested at Dharmavaram railway station, according to reports. He is said to be a distant relative of one of the girls.
The attack triggered panic among students and school staff. The circumstances that allowed an armed outsider to enter the school and reach a classroom during lessons are likely to come under scrutiny. Police have launched an investigation to establish the sequence of events and determine the motive behind the assault.
Chandrababu Naidu, Nara Lokesh condemn attack
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock and anger over the attack, describing it as barbaric. He said he was personally monitoring the injured student’s recovery and had directed doctors to provide her with the highest priority care.
Naidu also ordered the police to ensure that the accused faced stringent legal action. Education Minister Nara Lokesh condemned the assault, calling it an inhuman act against a young girl in a place meant for learning and safety.
The incident has raised serious questions about security arrangements in government schools and the protection of children within educational institutions. A school must be a place of learning and safety—not a space where students are exposed to such terrifying violence.
The investigation is underway, with the motive behind the attack yet to be officially established.
