The attack unfolded in front of a teacher in a Class 10 classroom, raising serious questions over school security
The man accused of the chainsaw attack on two Class 10 girls inside a classroom in Andhra Pradesh was shot by police the next day. He was hiding in a forest area when officers closed in.
The accused, 21-year-old Hemanth, alias Dummu, is in serious condition. According to police sources cited in local reports, officers acted on information that he was hiding in the forest. When they approached, he allegedly tried to flee with a knife and attacked personnel with stones, injuring several of them. Police then fired six rounds. NDTV reports he may lose a leg.
The attack on October 31 stunned a district already shaken by it. Around 10:30 am at the Zilla Parishad High School in Raptadu, Anantapur district, the accused allegedly walked into a Class 10 classroom with the chainsaw already running and struck before teachers or classmates could react. A teacher who witnessed it said staff first mistook the noise for construction work on the school premises. Two girls were injured. One, who tried to intervene to protect her classmate, was hurt in the leg. The other suffered life-threatening injuries. Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav said she sustained skull and rib fractures, damage to blood vessels and trauma to multiple parts of her body. She was shifted to a private hospital in Bengaluru after doctors gave her 10 units of blood.
Hemanth had been arrested earlier near Dharmavaram Railway station. The police firing came after that. Reports also describe the accused as a relative of the victim, according to IANS.
The case has raised hard questions about school security. A man reached a classroom, mid-session, carrying a running power tool. Where he obtained it, how he entered the premises unchallenged and what warning signs went unheeded are all matters the investigation must answer.
The police version of the shooting is the official account so far, and its circumstances remain under investigation.
