PM Modi says diplomacy only solution amid Putin residence attack reports
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed serious concern over reports claiming that Ukraine attempted to target the official residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, warning that such actions could dangerously escalate the ongoing conflict and derail peace efforts.
Reacting to the developments, PM Modi underscored that diplomacy remains the only credible pathway to ending hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.
“Deeply concerned by reports of the targeting of the residence of the President of the Russian Federation. Ongoing diplomatic efforts offer the most viable path toward ending hostilities and achieving peace. We urge all concerned to remain focused on these efforts and to avoid any actions that could undermine them,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X.
Modi’s remarks came a day after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov alleged that Ukraine had attempted to strike President Putin’s state residence in Russia’s Novgorod region using long-range drones. Lavrov warned that the incident would have serious implications for Moscow’s approach to negotiations.
According to Lavrov, Ukraine launched 91 long-range drones over December 28–29, all of which were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defence systems. Describing the alleged attack as “reckless,” the Russian foreign minister said it amounted to “state terrorism” and would not go unanswered, Reuters reported.
It remains unclear whether President Putin was present at the residence at the time of the alleged attack.
The reported incident has drawn reactions from global leaders amid heightened diplomatic efforts to end the war. Earlier, US President Donald Trump, who has been attempting to broker a peace deal between Moscow and Kyiv, expressed strong anger over the development.
Speaking to reporters in Florida, Trump said Putin had informed him of the alleged attack during a phone conversation between the two leaders.
“It’s one thing to be offensive, because they’re offensive. It’s another thing to attack his house. It’s not the right time to do any of that,” Trump said, adding that he was “very angry” after learning about the incident.
The developments come at a sensitive moment, as international efforts intensify to bring both sides back to the negotiating table and prevent a further widening of the conflict.
