At least two people were killed and several others injured in a shooting outside a church building in Salt Lake City, US, on Wednesday night, according to local media reports.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as the Mormon Church, while a funeral service was reportedly underway inside the building.

Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd said all eight victims were adults and were shot outside the church premises. The shooter or shooters fled the scene northbound on Redwood Road shortly after the attack.

As of late Wednesday night, no suspect was in custody. Police said they are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and analysing data from license plate readers in the area, including Redwood Road and 700 North.

Emergency response teams rushed to the scene, with visuals showing a heavy presence of police, ambulances, and fire vehicles with flashing lights. Redwood Road remains closed near the church as authorities urged the public to avoid the area.

According to the meetinghouse website, the two wards that meet at the church primarily serve members of the Tongan community. Susi Feltch-Malohifo’ou, CEO of Pacific Island Knowledge 2 Action Resources, one of Utah’s largest Pacific Islander organisations, said she has received numerous messages following the shooting and personally knows several of the victims, though their conditions remain unclear.
