China Says US Using Greenland as Pretext for Arctic Interests
China on Monday warned the United States against using other countries as a “pretext” to pursue its strategic interests in Greenland, asserting that Beijing’s activities in the Arctic fully comply with international law.
The remarks come amid escalating tensions after US President Donald Trump renewed his push to acquire Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark. Trump has argued that US control of the vast Arctic island is necessary to prevent Russia or China from gaining influence there, even suggesting that military force remains an option if negotiations fail.
Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning rejected Washington’s justification, saying China’s Arctic engagement is aimed at promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development. “China’s activities in the Arctic are conducted in accordance with international law,” Mao said, adding that the rights of all countries to operate in the region must be respected.
“The United States should not pursue its own interests by using other countries as a pretext,” she said, stressing that the Arctic concerns the broader interests of the international community.
Trump reiterated his position over the weekend, saying aboard Air Force One that the US “needs to take Greenland,” warning that otherwise Russia or China would. “I’d rather make a deal, but one way or the other, we’re going to have Greenland,” he said.
The comments have triggered sharp reactions in Europe. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has cautioned that an American takeover of Greenland would effectively spell the end of NATO. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and leaders of all major parties in the island’s parliament issued a joint statement reaffirming that Greenland’s future must be decided solely by its people, while expressing frustration at what they called US “contempt” toward the territory.
China, which declared itself a “near-Arctic state” in 2018, has sought a greater role in the region through initiatives such as the proposed “Polar Silk Road” under its Belt and Road framework.
Amid the growing diplomatic strain, Danish and Greenlandic officials are expected in Washington this week for talks, while preparations are also underway for a visit by US senators to Denmark.
