Fadnavis steps in to handle Maharashtra budget after Ajit Pawar’s demise

In a bid to ensure administrative continuity following the sudden demise of Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday announced that he will personally oversee the preparation of the 2026–27 State Budget.

Addressing concerns over a potential vacuum in the state’s financial planning, Fadnavis said Ajit Pawar had already completed most of the groundwork for the upcoming budget and that his efforts would be carried forward without deviation.

“Ajit Dada had handled all the budget preparations. To ensure his vision is fulfilled, I will personally oversee the remaining work starting tomorrow,” the Chief Minister said, adding that a decision on who will formally present the budget in the legislature would be taken at an appropriate time.

The passing of Ajit Pawar had triggered speculation over delays and leadership changes within the government. Fadnavis sought to dispel such concerns, stating that the budget process would proceed smoothly under his direct supervision.

The Chief Minister also reaffirmed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s full support to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Pawar family during this period of transition. He emphasised that the ruling MahaYuti alliance would respect and back any leadership decision taken internally by the NCP.

“Whatever decision the NCP takes regarding its leadership or the family, we as a government and as the BJP will stand firmly behind them,” Fadnavis said, underlining the alliance’s commitment to political stability.

Responding to questions on whether a formal proposal had been received for the vacant Deputy Chief Minister’s post, Fadnavis confirmed that consultations were ongoing but stressed that the final call rested with the NCP leadership.

“They have met me twice and discussed their internal processes and available options. However, it would not be appropriate for me to comment until they finalise their decision,” he noted.

Fadnavis also touched upon the pending mayoral elections in Mumbai, Nagpur, and several other cities. He said discussions within the MahaYuti alliance were underway and that candidates would be finalised in the coming days after consultations with local leaders and legislators.
