Suicide blast kills 31 at Shia mosque in Islamabad during Friday prayers

At least 31 people were killed and several others injured after a suicide bomber detonated explosives at a Shia mosque during Friday prayers in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, police sources confirmed.

The powerful explosion took place at Tarlai Imambargah, located in the Shehzad Town area, one of the densely populated parts of the federal capital. According to initial police findings, the attacker was intercepted at the mosque gate by security personnel but detonated the explosive device before he could be stopped.

Witnesses said the blast triggered panic as worshippers were gathered inside the Imambargah for prayers. Emergency responders and police teams rushed to the scene and launched rescue and evacuation operations. Authorities declared an emergency at major hospitals in Islamabad to treat the injured.

Police sources said the attacker was believed to be a foreign national with suspected links to Fitna al Khwaraji, a term used by Pakistani authorities for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). No militant group has officially claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

Friday’s attack also coincided with the state visit of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who arrived in Pakistan on Thursday for a two-day trip, further highlighting vulnerabilities in Pakistan’s internal security apparatus even during high-profile diplomatic engagements.
