Nine police officers were killed after heavily armed militants attacked a remote police post in Pakistan’s Balochistan province

At least nine police officers were killed after dozens of heavily armed militants stormed a remote police post in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province, triggering an intense overnight gunbattle and a large-scale counter-operation by security forces.

The attack took place in the remote Ziarat district, where militants launched a coordinated assault on the police post before dawn. During the attack, eight police personnel were briefly abducted, while several others sustained injuries.

Pakistani security forces, backed by the Frontier Corps, Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Special Operations Wing and Anti-Terrorism Force (ATF), launched a joint clearance operation soon after the assault. Authorities said 15 militants were killed during the operation, while all eight abducted police personnel were later rescued safely.

According to Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind, the officers killed in the attack included two Station House Officers (SHOs). The province has witnessed a sharp rise in militant violence in recent years, with security personnel increasingly coming under attack.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault. However, Pakistani officials said suspicion was likely to fall on the banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), which has carried out several high-profile attacks in the province. Separately, Reuters reported that local officials also linked the attack to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), though the claims are yet to be independently verified.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack and paid tribute to the slain officers, saying such incidents would not deter the country’s efforts to combat militancy. He also accused “Indian-backed militants” of carrying out the attack but did not provide evidence to support the claim. India has consistently rejected similar allegations made by Pakistan.

The latest assault underscores the deteriorating security situation in Balochistan, where separatist insurgents and Islamist militant groups have intensified attacks on security forces, government installations and infrastructure in recent months.
