Long-delayed promotion seen as recognition of service and legal vindication
In a significant development, the Indian Army has cleared Shrikant Prasad Purohit for promotion to the rank of Brigadier, bringing closure to a 17-year-long legal and professional ordeal.
The decision follows intervention by the Armed Forces Tribunal, which had stayed his retirement earlier this year and directed a review of his pending promotion.
Career stalled after 2008 arrest
Purohit’s career had remained in limbo since his 2008 arrest in the Malegaon blast case. Despite being granted bail by the Supreme Court of India in 2017 and returning to service, his promotions and seniority remained blocked for years.
A major turning point came in July 2025, when a special NIA court acquitted him of all charges, citing lack of evidence.
Following this, he was promoted to full Colonel in September 2025, partially restoring his career progression.
Tribunal intervention proved crucial
In March 2026, the tribunal ruled that Purohit deserved consideration for promotions on par with his batchmates, halting his retirement and ensuring his case was reviewed.
The latest clearance for Brigadier rank is being seen as a step towards correcting years of professional setback.
Recognition after prolonged struggle
Sources indicate the Army’s decision acknowledges the years lost during incarceration and trial.
Observers note that had his career not been interrupted, Purohit could have risen to even higher ranks by now.
