From reintroduction to natural growth, India’s cheetah comeback gathers pace
India’s cheetah revival programme marked another milestone as KGP-2, a 25-month-old Indian-born cheetah, gave birth to four cubs at Kuno National Park. The development takes the country’s total cheetah count to 57.
KGP-2 represents the second generation of cheetahs born in India and is the offspring of Gamini, one of the animals brought from South Africa. Her becoming a mother signals a major shift — from human-led reintroduction to natural breeding in the wild.
Momentum builds in Kuno
The latest births come close on the heels of another cheetah, Mukhi, delivering five cubs. Together, these developments show that the cheetahs are adapting well and the population is beginning to stabilise.
All eyes on survival
Officials confirmed that both the cubs and their mother are healthy, with teams closely monitoring their progress.
Kuno currently hosts 54 cheetahs, while three others are in the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary.
