Allegations include extortion, financial fraud, and misuse of religious influence

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday conducted search operations against a self-styled godman, Ashok Kharat, and his associates in Maharashtra as part of an ongoing money laundering investigation.

The कार्रवाई, carried out under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), follows an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) registered on April 6, based on an FIR filed at Sarkarwada Police Station.

According to officials, the case includes allegations of extortion, misuse of religious influence, and drug-facilitated assault involving multiple victims.

    Alleged financial irregularities

Preliminary findings indicate that Kharat allegedly operated several bank accounts through cooperative credit societies using third-party identities while retaining control as a nominee. Investigators found his mobile number linked to these accounts, suggesting active involvement in managing transactions.

The ED also suspects that funds were collected by selling ordinary items as “blessed” objects, with claims of spiritual or healing benefits. These proceeds, along with alleged extortion money, were reportedly invested in land deals.

A chartered accountant, Prakash Pophale, and his family members are also under the scanner in connection with these transactions.

    Searches across Maharashtra

Searches are being conducted at 11 locations linked to the accused and their associates, including residential and commercial premises as well as cooperative society offices. The raids cover multiple cities:

    • Nashik (5 locations)
    • Pune (3 locations)
    • Shirdi (3 locations)

Officials said further investigation is ongoing.
