397 passengers on one train, 147 on the other: What we know about the Toledo train collision
At least 10 people have died after two high-speed trains collided in Spain’s Toledo province on Wednesday, according to early reports. Rail traffic between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia has been suspended.
Spain’s rail infrastructure operator ADIF said the crash happened around 9:00 am local time. In a post on X, it described a rear-end collision between two trains on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line. A southbound Renfe AVE train, which is state-owned, struck a stationary train run by Iryo. The impact sent carriages tumbling down an embankment.
Esther Padilla, spokeswoman for the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, said the cause is not yet known. She said 397 passengers were on the Renfe train and 147 on the Iryo train. Iryo, an Italian-owned company, said it had activated its security protocols and was working closely with the authorities.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was shocked and in constant contact with Transport Minister Óscar Puente and Castilla-La Mancha president Emiliano García-Page. He said emergency services were assisting those affected, and he offered support to the victims and their families.
It is the second major disaster on Spain’s high-speed network this year. In January, a train derailed and collided with another near Adamuz, in what became the deadliest rail accident in Spain since 2013 and shook public confidence in the network.
