F414 engine deal moves ahead as GE and HAL finalise technical terms
US defence major GE Aerospace on Tuesday said it and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) have made significant progress in sealing a collaboration to co-produce F414 jet engines to power India’s future combat jets. Nearly three years ago, GE Aerospace signed an agreement with HAL to co-produce F414 fighter jet engines in India.
The two sides have been engaged in talks since then to firm up various aspects of the programme. “GE Aerospace and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) are pleased to announce significant progress regarding F414 co-production today, having reached agreement on technical matters,” GE Aerospace said.
“This agreement marks a significant step forward in strengthening economic growth and advancing cooperation for both India and the US and expands the 40-year partnership between GE Aerospace and HAL,” it said.
Eight nations have F414-powered aircraft in operation or on order, with a maintenance-focused focus. The F414 is designed to maximize time on wing, simplify maintenance, and keep life-cycle costs low. Its six-module engine architecture is reliable, easy to maintain, and interchangeable. With no scheduled overhauls and on-condition maintenance, the F414 maximizes engine availability, said GE Aerospace
For more than 30 years, the US Navy has depended on F414 power. Today, the F414 continues to deliver for the most demanding combat missions. The F414 engine proves its versatility every day as it continues to power frontline fighters for armed forces around the globe. The power behind the F-18 Super Hornet, the F414 has become the engine of choice for an increasing number of advanced, next-generation combat aircraft, said GE Aerospace.
